About Us

The Adrenoleukodystrophy Trust Aotearoa (ATA) was formed to facilitate pro-active support and development for all ALD affected whanau (families), based in Aotearoa-New Zealand. The largest local family group with ALD here is primarily based in and around the Orakei Marae in Tamaki Makaurau-Auckland, and are descendants of Te Hira & Rawinia Pateoro from the local hapu (tribes) of Ngati Whatua.

Our organisation aims to foster whanaungatanga (relationships), kotahitanga (unity) and manaakitanga (hosting events) in inclusive and supportive ways. Organisation and activities (such as regular hui) will be arranged to provide a forum to discuss, improve and give value to our experiences, family ties and access to information. This website achieves one of our early goals. It is an outcome of our meeting John Foreman from NZORD at our first major ALD hui (since the early 1990s when Dr Moser visited our shores) held in May 2009 at the Orakei Marae. We hope to provide sensible support, education and resources to our members and endeavour to seek answers to address any concerns they may have.
